Kit Davison Bursary Endowment

NOW AVAILABLE to students attending post secondary in the Fall.  Deadline is June 30, 2010.

PURPOSE:  The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to students registered with Muscular Dystrophy Canada in BC or the Yukon, and who plan to enroll in a program of studies at an accredited post-secondary institution.

ELIGIBILITY:  Three representatives of Muscular Dystrophy Canada will act as trustees for the bursary endowment.  In making the final selections, the trustees will consider factors such as:  academic potential, realistic goals and financial considerations, including extraordinary costs faced and other financial resources.  Decisions by the trustees will be considered final. 

USE OF THE BURSARY:  Bursaries will be awarded to students for payment of tuition, textbooks or other preauthorized special needs. 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  As a condition of acceptance, the recipient agrees to submit proof of enrollment and payment of tuition, text books or preauthorized special expenses, totaling the amount of the bursary, within three months of commencement of course of studies.  Trustees reserve the right to ensure that bursary funds are spent appropriately.

The Dr. Sawatzky Scholarship Award

NOW AVAILABLE to students attending post secondary in the Fall.  Deadline is June 30, 2010.

Purpose: The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to an exceptional student registered with Muscular Dystrophy Canada in BC or the Yukon.

Eligibility: Eligible candidates are those who plan to enroll in, or are currently enrolled in a program of undergraduate studies at an accredited degree-granting post-secondary institution in BC. Prior recipients of this award may apply again for an additional year. Other factors will include career, community involvement, and leisure lifestyle goals.

Use of the scholarship: The scholarship will be awarded to a student for payment of tuition and other school expenses at the student’s discretion.

Accountability: As a condition of acceptance, the recipient agrees to submit proof of enrollment within three months of commencement of course of studies. Decisions by the trustees will be considered final. Dr. Sawatzky or designate and representatives of Muscular Dystrophy Canada will act as trustees for the scholarship. In making the final selection, the trustees will consider the main factor to be academic potential.

BC/Yukon Fire Fighters’ Helping Hand Bursary

NOW AVAILABLE to students attending post secondary in the Fall.  Deadline is June 30, 2010.

Purpose: 
Fire Fighters in British Columbia and Yukon have been supporting Muscular Dystrophy Canada since 1954. Their leadership and dedication to our communities is truly admirable. 

This past year, the BC/Yukon Fire Fighter Advisory Group decided they would like to use the funds raised at the 2007 BC/Yukon Fire Fighter Conference, to fund a youth scholarship.   The purpose of the BC/Yukon Fire Fighters’ Helping Hand Bursary is to provide financial assistance to a student in need, who wishes to pursue ongoing post secondary education or training.

Bursary Award Criteria:
The Bursary is directed towards candidates who plan to enroll in, or are currently enrolled in a program of studies at an educational or training institution in BC or the Yukon.  The Bursary will be awarded on the basis of need and the recipient’s willingness to continue the Helping Hand legacy via a personal commitment to community.  

Eligibility:
Eligible candidates will be registered with the Muscular Dystrophy Canada in BC or Yukon.  There is no requirement that the chosen course of studies be accredited.  Prior recipients of the Bursary may reapply for an additional year of funding.

Use of the scholarship:
The scholarship will be awarded to a student for payment of tuition and other school expenses, necessary to ensure the student’s success.  

Award Decisions:
Representatives from Muscular Dystrophy Canada and the BC/Yukon Fire Fighter Advisory Group will act as trustees for the Bursary, and will make all decisions with respect to its award.  Decisions by the trustees will be considered final.   

Accountability: 
As a condition of acceptance, the Bursary recipient will agree to submit proof of enrollment and commencement of studies within one year of the awarding of the Bursary.
